Partnerships
The following is a list of partnerships we have had over the last several years. Some are ongoing partnerships, while others have been temporary partnerships sometimes lasting for a single event. All of them have been helpful to the Daniel Boone Soil & Water Conservation District.
The Powell River Partnership: The Powell River Partnership was established in 2001 by parties interested in preserving and maintaining water quality in Lee County and the Powell River. The group hosts an annual Float Trip and applies for grants to protect water quality. The Powell River Partnership meets the last Thursday of each month.
Lee County Board of Supervisors: some members attend water quality meetings and show interest in working with the group on upcoming projects (to provide funding, outreach assistance, local decision making, etc.)
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA): providing funding for outreach, agriculture BMP project, illegal dump site cleanup; technical assistance, grant writing aid, assistance with data collection for grant proposals
VA Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (DMME): providing assistance with acid mine drainage (AMD) monitoring (equipment, sample analyzing), information for grant narratives, maps, etc.
Office of Surface Mining (OSM): providing funding; local office providing assistance with AMD site monitoring; Allen Comp providing assistance with EPA grant proposal and Coalfields Stream
Reclamation and Community Improvement Project
Conservation District (SWCD) whose members consist of local residents (members of small watershed groups) and conservation partner agencies who meet to discuss natural resource concerns within the Daniel Boone SWCD’s boundaries.
Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation: aid with data research, tips for educational presentations, brochures for the public, activity booklets for students
U.S. Fish and Wildlife: providing the volunteer base for implementing on the ground projects (examples: distributing flyers, brochures, litter pick-ups and SOS monitoring)
Martin Creek Watershed Citizens for Clean Water: providing the volunteer base for implementing on the ground projects (examples: distributing flyers, brochures, litter pick-ups and SOS monitoring)
Lonesome Pine Soil & Water Conservation District: providing information and assistance with EPA grant proposal and Coalfields Stream Reclamation and Community Improvement Project
Hands Across the Mountain: providing assistance with EPA grant and OSM Cooperative Agreement (this organization will be the money-holder for both grants)
Upper Tennessee River Roundtable: providing technical assistance and advice on volunteer recruitment, public meeting presentations, litter clean-up assistance, etc.
Canaan Valley Institute: potentially providing funding for illegal dump site clean-ups; providing technical assistance for planned state-wide litter summit and Arc View Training and Assistance\r\n\r\nBlack Diamond Resource Conservation & Development: hosting “Talking Trash: a Southwest Virginia
Litter Summit,a workshop to inform key community members about the severity of litter and illegal dumps in Southwest Viginia and find ways to alleviate the problem
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers: provide training on AMD monitoring, provide maps of AMD and AML sites, provide assistance via funding and development AMD treatment systems
Virginia Dept of Forestry: provide assistance with greenway development projects, offer funding through Urban and Community Forestry Assistance Grants
Virginia Department of Environmental Quality: provide information about impaired streams in the area; have sent a representative to local public meetings to discuss TMDL process and listings
Division of Natural Heritage: provide information about local area information (land usage, population, etc.) and are assisting with EPA Environmental Justice Grant
Town of Pennington Gap: provide meeting space, assistance and support for projects in Pennington Gap
Grabeel’s IGA: local grocery store, donates supplies (drinks, snacks) for some meetings/events and Kids in the Creek Day
Food City: local grocery store, donated drinks for students at Kids in the Creek Day
Virginia Department of Transportation: provide trash bags for litter/illegal dump clean-ups, provide road maps of county
Powell Valley News: a local newspaper, provides coverage of meetings and print articles for DBSWCD at no charge
WJNV &WSWV: local radio stations, provide announcements for meetings at no charge
Lee County Litter Control: provides information/locations of illegal dump sites, assists with educational presentations/events
Lee County School Board: provides information about local science classes/teachers, provides assistance and support for arranging Kids in the Creek Day
Virginia Mining Association, Inc.: provides information about mining, a representative attends Lee County Water Quality Partnership meetings and North Fork Powell River Watershed public meetings
Lone Mountain Processing, Inc.: provided DBSWCD with waders for Kids in the Creek days, a representative sometimes attends meetings
U. S. D. A. Farm Service Agency: provides usage of copier, color printer and fax machine
Southeast Aquaculture Learning Center: Lynch, Kentucky facility that will be hosting a tour and learning exercise for the Powell River Partnership, DBSWCD and other partnering agencies.
Portal 31 & Kentucky Coal Mining Museum: Will provide someone knowledgeable of the Portal 31 project, as well as area coalmining to give some history of the area, as well as inform the group about the project.
